The Welsh Government has recently announced a package of support to revitalise Welsh town centres; including a digital towns initiative to support the viability of town centres in Mid Wales. The initiative includes both the installation of digital infrastructure including town centre Wi-Fi systems and footfall counters (LoRaWAN), and a support programme to help businesses across Powys to capitalise on this investment and maximise the use of digital technology!
Our ‘Think SMART’ initiative, through the Powys Digital Towns Business Support Programme, aims to engage and support local stakeholders and business owners to maximise their digital offering and utilise data from SMART town technology on the basis that:
* Towns in Powys identified for Wi-Fi infrastructure currently include Llandrindod Wells, Brecon Town Centre, Llanwrtyd Wells and Presteigne. However, all towns across Powys will be able to utilise and benefit from this data.

SMART Towns are areas that utilise different electronic methods, such as sensors, to collect data. Insights gained from this data is used to improve the day-to-day operations of the town. This in turn creates a more efficient, connected and informed town, improving future planning and regeneration.
Once registered, towns and businesses can use the demographic information voluntarily provided to consider changes to the town, its events or facilities. This data can help businesses better understand their customer base and trends which will support their future planning and marketing activities. For example, opening times, peak shopping times for special offers, customer flow for marketing materials, availability of parking or improved public conveniences. Additionally, using email addresses, those with access to the data can create targeted newsletters to share key information, promote upcoming events and draw attention to information about the town which may encourage repeat visits and increased trade.

However, all towns across Powys will be able to utilise and benefit from this data. Get in touch for more information on how to access the data.
If you are a stakeholder, business or social enterprise interested in accessing data from the Wi-Fi systems currently installed in Powys please get in touch via e-mail at newtownhub@focusenterprisehubs.wales.
Welsh Government, local councils and other organisations offer a number of funding schemes for towns to provide free WIFI access. While any such project will require some effort on the part of the town, in particular Town Councils, Chamber of Trade or town centre retailers, the economic benefits through better visitor engagement and contact will be worthwhile.
